What are ATF oils?

ATF oil, or Automatic Transmission Fluid, is nothing more than a transmission oil created specifically for automatic transmissions.

 

Oils for automatic transmissions have a composition optimized for the unique requirements of automatic transmissions. After all, this substance is not only responsible for lubricating the transmission, but also for the proper operation of the valves or torque converter clutch located in the gearbox.

    

It happens that ATF oils for automatic transmissions are also used in hydraulic power steering systems, as a lubricant in 4x4 transmission systems, as well as in some modern manual transmissions.

 

Modern ATF oils usually consist of an oil base and an impressive amount of additives such as:

 

  • rust inhibitors
  • surfactants protecting and cleaning metal surfaces
  • modifiers of kinematic viscosity and viscosity index
  • antioxidant compounds that inhibit oxidation and "evaporation"

When choosing oil for an automatic transmission, make sure that it meets the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer. Incorrect automatic transmission oil can cause transmission failure or serious damage.

Oil for automatic transmissions – should we change it?

 

Previously, there was an opinion not to change the oil in automatic transmissions. Ten, despite convincing manufacturers that the oil in the transmission should not be changed, it is assumed that it loses its properties after about 180,000 kilometers.

However, the interval of oil change in the transmission should be reduced up to 75,000 kilometers if the car is used in difficult conditions such as:

heavy urban traffic in hot weather conditions

use mainly in mountain areas

frequent pulling of trailers

fast driving or use on the race track

use of the vehicle as a taxi or special vehicle

We must remember that the automatic transmission is an extremely precise device and requires proper lubrication to serve for hundreds of thousands of kilometers without problems. Oil for this type of transmission is definitely not the product on which you should save.

BIZOL ATF Cleaner+ a50 is suitable to be used before AT fluid changes for all automatic transmissions. It dissolves disruptive deposits and residues providing optimal shifting performance and in this way extending the transmission service life.

Applications

A 250 ml can is efficient for up to 12 litres of fluid. Add BIZOL ATF Cleaner+ a50 to the automatic transmission fluid at operating temperature (approx. 40C) before the fluid change, then let the engine run for 10-15 minutes. Shift through all gears for the first 5-6 minutes. Then change the fluid and the ATF filter. The additive can also be used to flush steering gear systems (Power Steering) before changing the fluid.
